- Letter from Claybo to Blanche. He writes that his father brought up her letter and that he thought she had forgotten him but knows she is busy so he will forgive her. He says he argued with his father but it has been decided he will go to Portsmouth though his father would prefer if he stayed here in Springfield, but he has not been able to find employment here. So his plan is to go up to Boston the next morning and be in Portsmouth by noon and he tells of a few opportunities he is going to try and pursue. He then goes on to explain what he has been up to in the past few evenings. He discusses potential summer plans and a potential opportunity to see Blanche and they will dance. He tells her that when she writes again to address it to the Y.M.C.A. in Portsmouth as that is where he will be staying. He sends regards from his father and that if he is not careful he will be cut out. He then asks what she would like for a birthday present. He concludes the letter with, "Just all my love to you dear, Claybo. As for my being good- you know the understanding between us, don't you????" Letter is believed to have been written in May or June 1918. There is some racial language in this letter during the section when he explains what he has been up to in the past few evenings.
