Scope and Content:
Letter from Sarah Hammond Grimes Smith to Mary Grimes. Letter written from DeKalb, IL, April 27, 1864. Sarah writes of her sadness about the death of a friend in Keene. She is glad the family is in good health and to hear her nieces are thriving. She comments on the dairying, the weather, and flooding. The community in DeKalb is changing as families move away, and Sarah has been left largely without friends (from moving and from arguments). Measles are spreading through the children in DeKalb, keeping the Dr. busy. Sarah herself has been in good health, which she rather regrets as it means she has had to make bread for the church.
