- Letter from Sarah Hammond Grimes Smith to Mary Grimes. Letter written from DeKalb, IL, July 5, 1864. Sarah writes she is sorry to hear so many of the Grimes family and friends are unwell. She herself is weak and only to do a few hours of work in a day, often in the garden or the dairy, though she wishes she could help with the load at home, especially that of clothing the children. The Dr. has encouraged her to hire help around the house, though they cannot afford to have live-in help. Sarah hopes Isaiah has returned from the war, as so many others have died. The next draft in DeKalb calls for men, rather than money, and Sarah fears her own community will soon suffer what the rest of the nation has been grappling with.
