Scope and Content:
Letter from Sarah Hammond Grimes Smith to her sisters, Mary and Almira Grimes. Letter written June 29, 1861 from DeKalb, IL. Sarah was 'truly glad' to hear from her friends at home. She thought she was developing Cholera but fortunately it passed. She thanks her mother for the pills received. The Dr. (whom she is very much in love with) is also much improved (without taking the pills), though she worries about his age. They are in a difficult financial situation due to stock depreciation and the Dr. not taking much money but she is excited to return home for a brief visit. She misses the children very much. Sarah worries about Frank Grimes (likely Frank Dwinell) and his influence on Alexander Hamilton Grimes. Church attendance is good, and the Dr. reads the sermons, though it is taxing on him. She reassures the family that they are strict Congregationalists and weill not be baptized Methodist of Mormon.
