Scope and Content:
The Pinkham Notch Hut Log Books consist of three volumes of guest registers for the Appalachian Mountain Club's Pinkham Notch Hut in the White Mountains, NH. The registers date from 1921 to 1927, with a few additional entries made in 1931 and 1949. The beginning of the season includes the names of the hut masters and, sometimes, a photograph of them. The hut masters include: Joseph "Joe" B. Dodge, Henry F. Culver, Bassford C. Getchell, Edwin W. Nelson, Langdon Spring, Milton E. MacGregor, William W. Laker, DeLong H. Monahan, Robert S. Monahan, Richard Abbott, Allan B. Parker, and Arthur F. Whitehead. \n \n The volumes then consist primarily of signatures and locations of guests to the hut, a number of whom are from summer camps. While many of the guests are local to New England, others come from across the county and internationally. Some entries include sketches, doodles, or drawings of camp logos, hikes, ships, or scenery. One such drawing by Jack Russell is as an ink and pencil portrait of a woman in volume 3, page 121. Other entries include additional information on the guests' trips, such as where they hiked to, the weather, and wildlife sightings. Examples include in volume 1, page 112, the Cold River Camp’s Camp Song; in volume 2, page 112, a note from Jack on June 1, 1925, which mentions a blizzard and hail storm during a trip to the Lake of the Clouds; and in volume 3, pages 23 and 24, an entry from Joe Dodge dated October 22, 1925 on the season. Other materials in the volumes include a 1927 newspaper clipping on the "Porky Gulch" cabin, which states eighteen hikers will attempt a mid-winter ascent of Mt. Washington.\n \n See the finding aid for a more complete list of summer camps, businesses, and other organizations listed in these volumes.
