Scope and Content:
This is a single bound volume of entries in a guestbook kept at a cottage on Webster Lake in Franklin, NH, between 1886 and 1914. Entries were made by family, extended family, friends, neighbors, visitors from afar. Those living locally visited often. Many wrote notes describing their visit - these include hikes, the results of hunting and fishing, boating, menus for meals, games. The family noted repairs to the cottage and the activities (and misadventures) of beloved pet dogs. Although most visits were for pleasure and entertainment, one visitor's appendicitis and subsequent surgery (done at the cottage) and recovery are fully documented. There are photographs, usually cyanotypes, of the landscape, cottage exterior and interior, picnics, dogs, and of the appendicitis victim's recovery and the physician, Dr. J. Sarah Barney, who visited her daily. The cottage was used most often in the summer, but there are also descriptions of winter visits to check on it and for snowshoeing and skating parties. An index of names in this volume is available.
