- The Hibbert Miles Family Papers are largely official documents and military files relating to Hibbert Miles' (1914-2001) military service in World War II; most of them are about his discharge and summarize his service. After several deployments in the United States, he was sent to Tinian Island, India, where he served in the China-Burma-India theater. There are also photographs of him alone, of his wedding, of him with fellow soldiers, and two panoramic posed shots of his entire unit. One folder in the collection describes the 1943 death of Hibbert Miles' brother, Lewis A. Miles (1922-1943), in an accident while he was in basic training at Camp Stewart, GA. Another has two photographs of Lewis Miles Also of interest is a copy of a letter titled "And That's How It Ended" written on August 14, 1945 by Albert R. Evans describing the last wave of fighter planes to leave Tinian Island before the Japanese surrender. There is a copy of Amherst in the World Wars, published 1947, with biographical entries for people from that town who served in WWII and short essays about both wars. The collection contains only two letters written by Hibbert Miles to his family, both of which talk about his discharge and trip home in 1945. Incoming correspondence consists of invitations to reunions of his military unit.
