Scope and Content:
The early materials among the Hildreth Family of Cornish, NH, Papers, 1749-1985, include account books and diaries with information about wages paid, crops planted, and items bought and sold. Later, William Hildreth (1839-1911), who ran the farm from 1892 to his death and probably lived on the property all his life, kept a daily record of his farm activities - what he planted, what the weather was like, and family activities. Lillian Hildreth Tyrrell (1887-1962), who selected, organized, annotated, and labeled most of the material in the collection, kept her school papers as well as essays, short stories, and poems she wrote and tried to publish in the 1920s and 1930s. Otherwise, she retained little personal material other than letters from her son, James "Jim" Hildreth Tyrrell (1917-1996), who wrote frequently to her during his military training and deployment to Europe during World War II. The World War II period materials contain images of the soldier and his companions, who were in the U.S. Army Artillery. He trained at Camp Haan in Riverdale, CA, spent leave time in that vicinity as well as in Washington and Montana, all of which he documented with photographs, mostly of scenery. Before being posted to Europe, he completed his military training at Ft. Eustis, VA, and there are military photographic postcards showing weapons, planes, and barracks there. His ephemera incudes some editions of newspapers published at the bases. He was discharged with a "mental" disability and after discharge from treatment, continued to live in the Cornish area, apparently supporting himself with his military benefits and occasional odd jobs. A letter written in 1965 to support a fellow soldier’s disability claim describes the conditions under which they served. Lillian kept and identified photographs of herself as a child and teen; of her parents, relatives, and her children when they were young; and of the farm in Cornish and other family properties in Plainfield, NH, and Wilder, VT, but little correspondence and no photographs later than about 1925. She also researched the family genealogy and history and kept her notes, obituaries, newspaper clippings, and other ephemera about the various branches, predominately the Hildreth family, Manchester family, and Tyrrell family. Photographs in the collection are in several formats and date before around 1925 except for the 1942 to 1944 images taken by and of James Hildreth Tyrrell. There are cased tintypes and daguerreotypes, cartes de visite and cabinet cards (both loose and in albums), and snapshots. Many are identified, some are dated. The area around the Cornish farm and the farm buildings are well documented until about 1920, as are some streets in Wilder, Vermont.
