- Records of the New Hampshire Centennial Home for the Aged are scattered across the years 1805-1994 among a variety of subject categories, with no consistent thread for any one kind of material. Records documenting the operation of the facility (invoices and other financial records) are mostly from the earlier years, 1920s to 1945, while information about the health of individual members (some death certificates, nurses' notes, medical correspondence) date from the 1950s to 1970s. Member records include some sporadic family papers, including commissions, wills, and pension documents from 1805 to the 1890s. There is no documentation of the final twenty years of the institution's existence, why it closed, or what happened to any remaining residents. Although there are financial summaries (ledgers, etc.) for approximately 1910-1950, the more granular records such as bills and receipts are not helpful in documenting the impact of World War I (there are none for the years 1915-1919), and such records are similarly lacking for the early years of World War II (information for 1946 only). Founders, board members and employees seem to have tried to make the institution as home-like as possible and to this end, residents were referred to as members, as in members of a family.
