Scope and Content:
Accession 1988.054 is a heterogeneous group of papers generated by the construction and operation of five different, but at various times more or less closely associated, New Hampshire railroads. Most of the documents date from about 1845 to about 1875. The roads were: (1) the Northern Railroad, (2) the Sullivan Railroad, (3) the Central New Hampshire Railroad, (4) the Concord & Claremont Railroad, and (5) the Contoocook Valley Railroad. Their occurrence together probably derives from the fact that, as one historian said, by 1873 the Northern Railroad had a controlling interest in all these roads and managed them as one enterprise with itself. It added the Peterborough & Hillsborough Railroad as soon as that road was built in 1878.
