The Champney Family Papers, 1766-1973, contain valuable information about the life of Benjamin Champney and his immediate and extended family. Included in this collection are over 200 pieces of family correspondence, financial documents, deeds, photographs, poetry, newspaper clippings, and a diary. Correspondence and financial documents within the collection include those from artist Benjamin Champney (1817-1907), his father Benjamin Champney (1764-1827), his wife Mary Caroline Champney (1829-1876), his brother Henry Trowbridge Champney (1825-1917), his son Kensett Champney (1854-1939), and his daughter Alice C. (Champney) Wyer (1869-1945). Also found within this collection are documents from Ebenezer Champney, Sarah Champney, and the Cragin family, whom Benjamin's sister, Mary Louisa, married into in 1837. Items of note include a diary of Champney's wife, Caroline, while she traveled to Europe with her husband in 1865, as well as a rare photograph of Caroline. Several other photographs within the collection, as well as extensive correspondence from Kensett to his sister Alice and from his children to their aunt, document Kensett Champney's life in Guatemala. Newspaper clippings and miscellaneous writings provide insight into the activities of Champney as an active painter in nineteenth-century Boston.
