Abstract:
Charles C. Paige was born on June 28, 1838 joined the 11th Regiment, New Hampshire Volunteers at Candia, NH, on August 11, 1862, and participated in many pivotal Civil War campaigns and battles. He was discharged as a Sergeant after being wounded, and returned to New Hampshire. In 1911 he published a memoir of his wartime experience. This collection consists mainly of letters Paige wrote to his wife and family during his participation in the Civil War as well as correspondence concerning the personal memoir of the war he authored in 1911.
Scope and Content:
The Charles C. Paige Papers consist of correspondence generated from his tenure in the Civil War, serving with the 11th Regiment, New Hampshire Volunteers. The majority of the letters were written by Paige to his wife, Melissa "Millie" Cheney Paige. They provide a valuable narrative of events and feelings regarding the lives of New Hampshire soldiers and their families during the Civil War. There are two diary excerpts enclosed within these letters, as well as miscellaneous writings and correspondence to extended family. Paige wrote the bulk of these letters from the field and the hospital in Philadelphia where he recovered from an injury. The letters document notable Civil War battles: the Fredericksburg Campaign, Vicksburg, Jackson, the Mississippi Campaign, Harper's Ferry, Burnside's retreat, and the siege of Knoxville. Correspondence generated after the Civil War consists of thank-you letters written to Paige in 1911 and 1912 from family and friends who received the book of his Civil War memoirs. There are a few gaps in the collection: some folders contain envelopes that are missing a letter, and the months of May, October, and November of 1864 are missing altogether. Two oversized letters are separated from the collection.
