- Scope and Content:
- The collection contains photographs, newspapers clippings, and other items used by C. George McLure in the preparation of A Band Scrapbook (Monroe, NH: Knights Tax Service, 1991). Completed in 1991, this large tome is an essential source for understanding both the particular biography of C. George McLure and the general history of McLure's bands. It includes biographical notes on the various stages of McLure's life, concert programs, newspaper clippings, and-most significantly for this collection-photographs. Understanding the layout of A Band Scrapbook is absolutely essential for comprehending the items found in the C. George McLure Papers. The scrapbook is organized into sections, with each section themed around a different high school band or chronological period in McLure's life. Unusually, each section has a separate pagination. So, for instance, page 1 of the second section ("Miscellaneous") follows immediately after page 154 of the first section ("McLure's"). This is very important for understanding the labels accompanying the photographs, particularly as the labels are often the only way to know when a particular photograph was taken. The vast majority of the photographs contained in the C. George McLure Papers are undated. For example, a photograph of George McLure and a sleeping boy with a trombone found in Folder 4 (Group Photographs, 1950s) is undated. Fortunately, newspaper clippings found on page "McLure's 118" of A Band Scrapbook inform the researcher that the student is Frank Spears and that the photo was taken in 1955. The C. George McLure Papers contains most, but not all, of the original photographs used to create A Band Scrapbook. These photographs were organized into collages, which were then scanned to make the scrapbook. Unfortunately, these collages are extremely fragile and falling apart. Many labels have fallen off, and numerous photographs are damaged in some way. In particular, several photos are covered in adhesive residue and others are stuck together (including almost every item in Folder 7).
