- Letter from Rufus G. Beardslee [Beardsley] at the National Hotel in Washington, DC, to John K. Porter in Albany dated August 28, 1853. In the letter, Beardslee writes of meeting with President Franklin Pierce, who they were introduced to by Dr. Coolidge. He notes Pierce seemed indifferent to the Burke affair, but before the time they left he was interested in the matter and well aware of the facts. He notes Pierce requested they see him again before leaving town. Beardless notes they also met with the Secretary of State, Judge Mason, and the Commissioner who examined their papers and models. He goes on to discuss an interference claim, which they feel is a conspiracy to defraud them. Beardslee ends the letter by by stating the President asked to be remembered to Mr. Carroll.
