Scope and Content:
This report entitled “Class Size and Demographics” investigates the relationship between class size and relevant demographics on third grade student performance on the standardized tests of the New Hampshire Educational Improvement and Assessment Program (NHEIAP). The study found little difference in average achievement among class sizes of 15 to 30 students. In contrast factors such as family income, adult education level, and gender were found to have a clearer influence on performance results. The results suggest that reducing class size does not necessarily produce higher levels of achievement. The results also suggest NHEIAP test scores should be used cautiously when determine the success of school since performance is strongly linked demographic factors. Relevant demographics should be used by the NH Department of Education for comparisons between schools, and basic state education aid should take demographic differences into account.
