- Scope and Content:
- The article, Why Average Isnt Average cautions against the standard educational statistical practice of comparing the average test scores of students at a particular school with an overall state average. The author recommends collecting relevant demographic information on each student as part of a statewide assessment program and for the state to use demographic data to group those schools and school districts that enroll similar student populations. Doing so allows for a more complete understanding of the success of school with student populations that are different from the state average.
