Abstract:
Mike Pride researched and wrote two books about the participation of New Hampshire residents in the U.S. Civil war. This is a collection of primary materials he acquired and used: letters to and from soldiers, personal and political letters before, during and after the war; photographs of soldiers and politicians. There is also a small amount of printed war-related ephemera (eulogy of Lincoln, speeches, patriotic envelopes, etc.)
Scope and Content:
This collection is an artificial collection gathered by Mike Pride, a journalist, historian, and author of two books about New Hampshire's involvement in the Civil War. Pride acquired Civil War era letters written by approximately 65 individuals, of who most were soldiers and identified by author. They were members of New Hampshire regiments 1 through 17; for some regiments there are several soldiers represented but for others, only a single one. The collection also includes the pre-war letters of Edward E. Sturtevant, the first New Hampshire man to volunteer to fight in the war. Sturtevant is featured in one of Pride's books. Pride supplemented the letters he gathered with photographs of Civil War soldiers. This is a collection of 109 carte de visite photographs, 81 of which are identified. Although the primary focus of the collection is on Civil War soldiers and their families, Pride also collected personal and political letters from the years before and after the war. Some were written by politicians, but most are ordinary peoples' correspondence. The collection also includes photographs, (mostly carte de visite) of non-military people; most of which are identified. There is a small amount of printed matter and ephemera from the Civil War era. Among these items are patriotic printed envelopes, speeches, a Lincoln eulogy, poems, etc. Of interest are two 1863 pamphlets that detail disciplinary actions taken by the army against named soldiers. Only one of these (November, 1863) lists any New Hampshire men. There is also an 1850 satirical newspaper printed in Concord, NH, The Calathumpian. On the fringes of the collection is a miscellany of items ranging from a 1775 deed to a post card of a visit by Charles Lindbergh to Concord, NH in 1927.
Arrangement:
The collection has been divided into five series. Series I. Civil War Letters, 1861-1865; Series II. Personal and Political Letters, 1775-1914, bulk 1840-1880; Series III. Edward E. Sturtevant Letters, 1843-1862; Series IV. Printed Matter, 1850-1927; Series V. Photographs, circa 1860-1910.
