Scope and Content:
Letter from H. M. Evans in Strafford, NH, to Lieutenant Joe Prime dated December 1, 1863. In the letter, Evans notes he has not written sooner because the "infernal draft" came up and he was selected to fight in the Civil War. He goes on to state he had no desire to sacrifice himself for the "damed nigger" so he instead paid $450 to hire a substitute to fight for him. Evans goes on to state in doing this he is "endowed with more patriotic ardor than the man who will enlist for the sake of a big bounty." The letter goes on to discuss local events, including the funeral of Moses Pillsbury of the 4th New Hampshire Regiment.
