- Scope and Content:
- Letter from Alvin Russell Davis to Bertha E. Stearns, dated July 24, 1918. The letter is addressed from 'somewhere in France'. Alvin is in the hospital after being 'slightly wounded' and will not return to his Division for about a month. He is not eager to return any sooner than that. Many of his friends from Keene were killed going 'over the top', and he thinks of their families. Alvin reflects on the difficulty of fighting for one's country in a foreign place, and on the fighting abilities of New England soldiers. He writes about his negative feelings for those who were drafted, rather than enlisting. He is happy Bertha is teaching school next year and is eager to see her soon.
