- Letter from John Read, Collector at Wilmington, NC, to Joseph Whipple, Collector at Portsmouth, NH, dated September 19, 1797. In the letter, Read informs Whipple the ship by the name of Betsy of Wilmington must actually be the Snow Aran. He goes on to state the certificates sent along were never issued from his port and that the names of the signatures are either fake or merchants of no position. Read provides a timeline of the Snow's time at his port, notes this is the most daring fraud he has ever heard of, and hopes they will be prosecuted with the utmost severity.
