Photographic print of the Sixth Federal Bridge in East Concord, NH. The caption states, "Sixth Federal Bridge. Built in 1873, under the general direction of Hon. John Kimball, then mayor of Concord. The fifth bridge was lost by the freshet of 1872. To allow the widening of the river's channel it was made longer by forty feet than its predecessor. Its superstructure was made of wrought iron. Its abutments and piers were constructed of closely fitted stones, laid in cement, so accurately fitted to each other that any impingement upon any part of any pier or abutment would encounter the resistance of its whole mass." See item for a breakdown of expenditures for the bridge, which had a total cost of $27,024.35.
