On June 13, 1859, the South Church at the corner of Main and Pleasant street burned. The society wanted a new location and selected the site of Col. William Austin Kent's home on Pleasant street. The lot contained about wo acres, and from-erly belonged to the estate of Peter Green, Esq. In 1816 this house had to be moved to make room for the new state house. the house was sold to Col. William Austin Kent, the lot he selected was on Pleasant street site of South Church. June 22, 1825, General LaFayette was a guest of Mr. Kent and honored this house with his presence.
