Scope and Content:
The Foss Family Correspondence, 1863-1865, consists primarily of Civil War correspondence to and from Lemuel Foss and his family, including his parents, brothers, and sisters. Lemuel served in the 13th New Hampshire Infantry and he writes from camps in Virginia, including at Suffolk, Portsmouth, and Hampton. His letters provide updates on camp life, his heath and the health of his fellow soldiers, their movements, and fighting. In a letter dated May 8, 1863, Lemuel writes to his family the news of his brother, Amaziah’s, death and the cost of having him returned home. A response from his parents on May 17, 1863, notes they cannot travel to retrieve him, but that they intend to get Amaziah no matter the expense. Other letters mention such news as Joseph Prime is looking to get a commission with the Colored Troops, the arrival of wounded soldiers every few days, and that Lieutenant Dustin was taken prisoner. Lemuel's later letters are written from various hospitals from Virginia to New Hampshire. Letters from home, primarily from his father Woodbury and brother E. [Edwin] Frank, provide updates on the family, local sentiment on the war, Copperheads in New Hampshire, and updates on other soldiers. One letter in this collection is on U.S. Christian Commission letterhead.
