- The Foss Family Papers, 1863-1865, consist of Civil War correspondence to and from Lemuel Foss, with one letter from his brother, Amaziah Foss. Both Amaziah and Lemuel Foss served in the 13th New Hampshire Infantry, enlisting on August 22, 1862. Amaziah died in the war on May 7, 1863; Lemuel was discharged on June 28, 1865. The majority of correspondence in this collection is between Lemuel Foss and his family in Strafford, NH. Lemuel writes from camps in Virginia, including at Newport News and Hampton, as well as from hospitals in Portsmouth, VA, and Concord, NH. His letters provide updates on his health after catching diphtheria during an outbreak at their camp, daily life in the regiment, requests for supplies, and updates on his brother, Amaziah. A letter dated May 25, 1863 from Lemuel reports the extent of Amaziah's injury and his death. Other letters mention the Copperheads in New Hampshire, men who died in their regiment, concern over the lack of contact from the 11th Regiment, and of Joseph H. Prime who was commissioned as an officer in the 7th Regiment Infantry, United States Colored Troops. Other correspondence comes from Joseph H. Prime and Joseph Leighton. There is one letter on 13th New Hampshire Regiment letterhead.
