The Joseph T. Cotton Papers consists of correspondence, transcriptions, brief biographical information, and a certificate of disability for Joseph Marsh. The materials date from 1862 to 1866. Joseph T. Cotton of Gilmanton, NH, served with Company B of the 12th New Hampshire Infantry, enlisting in August of 1862. He was wounded in the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863, spending a year in the hospital before being discharged for disability. The bulk of the letters in this collection are from Joseph Cotton to his family. He writes mostly of his leg injury and time in two hospitals: St. Aloysius Hospital and Harewood Hospital, both in Washington, DC. Two letters contain engravings: one of the Battle of Fair Oaks and the other of Capitol Building in Washington, DC. There are also a few letters from other members of the family in this collection, either to or about Joseph.
