- Letter from Alvin Russell Davis in Liverpool, England, to his mother, Addie Erwin, in East Sullivan, NH, dated October 9, 1917. Alvin provides his new address and a story of his trip to England, which he asks his mother to copy and send to Bertha. His included essay "My Trip to England" details time leaving Camp Bartlett in Westfield, MA, at 5 p.m. on September 24, 1917 by train through Springfield to Hartford. He notes the U.S. Marine Band played while they boarded their ship with many people cheering them on as they went down the Hudson, seeing the Statue of Liberty. Alvin goes on to discuss what they did throughout their days onboard, ships they passed, ships in their convoys, the weather and its effect on the sea, their health and how many had measles, and what he did on duty. His essay ends while they are off the coast of England.
