Scope and Content:
The letters from Moses Twombly Jr. to his family describe his company’s travel from Concord to their encampment outside Fredericksburg and the fighting in that city in December of 1862. Though his company was in reserve and did not participate directly in the battle, he mentions what the ruined city looked like and the belongings of residents scattered in the open. One letter to his son describes how he lives in camp: the structure supporting the tent roof, the food. Most of his letters, however, offer little in the way of detail or description of people or places. His health is frequently mentioned, and he usually laments being too busy to write much. Other items in the collection are letters and notices received by his wife about her widow's pension, Moses's enlistment certificate, and the leather portfolio in which he kept his writing paper.
