- Letter from Nehemiah Cleavland in Westport, CT, to Nancy E. Means in Orange, NJ, dated March 11, 1876. In the letter, Cleavland discusses his visit to Massachusetts and provides updates on their friends and family, noting Mrs. Merriman is not looking strong, which is attributed to her putting too much of her soul into her portrait drawings. He goes on to detail events he attended, stating Phillip Brooks' sermon was "a grand burst of sacred eloquence." Cleavland then spends the rest of the letter providing his opinion on the latest in politics, mentioning Babcock & Belknap, possibly in reference to William W. Belknap's trader post scandal and the trial of Orville E. Babcock. He states though there is a sense of national disgrace, he is not discouraged, and provides words of encouragement.
