Scope and Content:
Letter from Charles L. Brigham to his mother, dated May 20, 1863. In the letter, Charles says he is now in Crab Orchard, Kentucky, which takes its name from the large number of crab apple trees in the area. He tells his mother that a number of men from his brigade were captured by "the rebs" the night before last. He says he had received his mother's previous letter, asking him if he can join his brother Ed's, company. He declines the request, as he feels well drilled in the infantry and does not want to learn cavalry drill. On top of that, Charles' company is so small, they will not let him go.
