- Letter from Charles E. Sherman in Washington, DC, to Senator John Parker Hale, dated March 26, 1860. In the letter, Sherman responds to Hale's statements on the Senate floor regarding land claims in Florida and the United States Supreme Court's 1851 decision in United States v. Ferreira. He notes he meant to reach out to Hale before the debate and states the cases should have been kicked out of Congress. Sherman references the constitution in regards to jurisdiction, the Act of 1792, and that the case the Supreme Court based their ruling on has been overturned in 1794, resulting in an appended note by the Court. He states "No other decision of the Court, from the first Case in Dallas, to the last Case in Howard, has been qualified by Such a Note, placed there by the Court which made it - not Even the Dred Scott decision, - however much it may require it, in the Opinion of some." The end of his letter goes into detail on two of his cases of wealthy plantation owners who experienced significant loss during the evacuation of their servants and slaves: that of Mr. Fraser (John Fraser) of Florida whose will states "the money due him for these injuries, goes to Colored people in Africa" and that of Zephaniah Kinglsey who lost "40 servants" and "the residue of his Slaves were Colonized in Hayti [Haiti]."
