- Letter from Jane Means (Appleton) Pierce in Washington, DC, to her mother Elizabeth Appleton in Brunswick, ME, postmarked January 10, 1839. In the letter, Pierce provides updates on the health of her father-in-law General Benjamin Pierce, who has been very ill. She then spends the rest of the letter updating her mother in the happenings in Washington, including of speeches by Mr. Clay and Mr. Calhoun and a detailed paragraph on the visit by America Vespucci, a descendant of Amerigo Vespucci. Her letter notes America's claim upon the American people, her attendance to parties, and the scar she obtained from a sabre in battle. She ends the letter by inquiring about Professor Haddack's decision and inquiring if her mother has the Portland Advertiser, as Brooks' letters are amusing.
