- Letter from George Meserve, collector of Stamp Act duties for New Hampshire, in Portsmouth, NH, to Governor John Wentworth dated September 27, 1765. In the letter, Meserve tells of his arrival in Boston, MA, to a mob of angry citizens who planned to destroy the ship as they thought he brought the stamped paper. He states he had to write a letter to resign from his position in order to be allowed off the ship, where he was informed of the anger across the colonies regarding the Stamp Act. Meserve notes he was burned in effigy in Portsmouth before he could send a letter to the town telling of his position. He ends the letter by noting of the hardship of the Molasses Act and of the breach in their council.
