The James Madison Rix Papers consist of 59 original, handwritten documents, stored in four folders in one box. The folders are organized chronologically, containing specified years during which the contained correspondence was written. The last item in the collection is an inventory, which includes a list of all names of Rix's correspondents within the collection. These letters are mainly professional and routine correspondence related to his newspaper, The Coos County Democrat; work in the New Hampshire House of Representatives and Senate; or bank commissions. Correspondents are friends, colleagues, or unrelated professional persons from mainly New Hampshire. There are two items not correspondence. One is a copy of an act for settlement of the claims of New Hampshire against the United States dated August 31, 1850. The other is his notes and meeting minutes from the 1853 New Hampshire Senate convention. Information about his family and personal life does not exist within the collection, and information from his life between 1811 and 1836 is also non-existent within the collection.
