Accounts of the postmaster of Hillsborough, NH, dated October through December of 1834. Braverter Gray of Hillsborough served as postmaster during this time. One group of accounts documents the mails that were sent from the Hillsborough post office. These accounts list the date, to which town post office the letters were sent, the amount for paid letters, the amount for unpaid letters, and the amount for free letters. Totals are made at the bottom of each page, with grand totals for the quarter on the last page. Another set of accounts lists the mails received at the Hillsborough post office for the quarter starting October 1, 1834. These accounts list the date received, from what post office the mails were received, the date of the bills received, the amount for unpaid letters, the amount for way letters, the amount undercharged from other offices, the amount overcharged and mis-sent from other offices, the amount paid distributed and originally, and the number of free letters. Each amount is again totaled at the bottom of each page. The final set of accounts documents the newspapers and pamphlets received at the Hillsborough post office for the quarter starting October 1, 1834. A note indicates that the postage of newspapers is required to be paid in advance at the beginning of each quarter. This account lists the date the item was received, the name of the newspaper or pamphlet, where the newspaper or pamphlet was published, how many times it is published in a week, the number of subscribers, the number of newspapers and pamphlets, and the amount of postage, which is totaled at the bottom of the account.
