Scope and Content:
The Clinton Averill McLane Correspondence consists primarily of letters from Clinton McLane to his wife, Dorothy E. McLane, during his service in World War I. Dating from November 1917 to June 1918, the letters document his time with the Signal Corps at Charlotte, NC, and Camp Wadsworth in Spartanburg, SC, and include both handwritten and typed correspondence. While McLane did serve in France and Germany, there are no letters from his European deployment. Some letters contain enclosures, including a menu, a music festival program, a photograph of McLane and other officers in May 1918, general orders, and a list of songs with lyrics. Also included in the collection is an oversized photograph of delegates to the Republican National Convention and a delegate's ticket on the photograph's mat, dated 1900. Clinton McLane's father, John McLane, served as a delegate to the 1900 Republican National Convention.
