There are also some letters that describe the poor areas of the South in the aftermath of the Civil War, still evident after nearly 40 years. Thirty letters describe Gay's eight month trip to Europe from August 1906 through May 1907, including Scotland, England, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, and the Netherlands.
