The massacre was on the opposite side of the road down in the field by the Eddy stable and a large tree standing near the place, was soon after marked with the initials of the slain, and stood for many years, and until cut down was the only memorial of the event. When, in 1837, this granite shaft was, because of the difficulty in obtaining the desired site, it was erected a few rods east of the scene of the massacre, and on the opposite side of the road. The spot in the Old North where the bodies were buried cannot be exactly identified; but it was very near the place now occupied as the burial plat of the Bradley and Ayer family. Richard Bradley, by finally the fence was built from funds provided by Mrs. Harvey Jewell, a daughter of Mr. Bradley."
