April 28, 1849 a committee tryed [tried] to purchase a lot of land at the intersection of Merrimack street and Merrimac Lane for the building of an engine house but the land could not be obtained so the first engine house was built on Main street in November 1849 and furnished at an expense of $34.94. Later this track of land was purchased and the engine house erected in 1853. The engine was known as a Button tub, built in New York City for $735, all the other engines in the vicinity being Humman tubs, built in Boston. This house was destroyed by fire March 3, 1882. Pioneer engine-house and apparatus, loss to the city, $3,500; Pioneer company, $200; Drum corps, $75, all not insured. Incendiary. This hand-tub could play two streams of water with powerful effect."
