This artificial pond was made in 1848 by the damming of Bow brook, which had an area of about six acres. This pond was a favorite skating place for the people of Concord in winter. The ringing of the skates excited the inmates, who stood at the windows and excited the children by yelling at them. This picture is of the outlet of the pond crossed by a bridge guarded by a beautiful ornamental iron fence. Pleasant street can be seen on the right of the picture with the Merrimack Jail over the unpainted house on the street."
