Undated photographic print of Asa McFarland's headstone at the Old North Cemetery in Concord, NH. The caption states, "Rev. Dr. McFarland was a native of Worcester, Mass., graduated from Dartmouth in 1793. Ordained Pastor of the North Church in March 7, 1798, which he faithfully and successfully sustained for 27 years. He died February 18, 1827. Dr. McFarland was married three times. His first two wives were Nancy and Clarissa Dwright. The third was Elizabeth Kneeland, of Boston, who survived her husband by eleven years. During the greater part of his ministry he enjoyed the confidence of the town and the effec-tions of the church. His regard for the interests of both were sincere, and lasting as his life. When in 1824, in consequence of bodily infirmities, he concluded to resign h[is] ministerial charge, he acted from a full conviction that the religious interest of the people required it. He did it not only unsolicited, but in opposition to the advice of some of his substantial friends. Proposition of Rev. Asa McFarland. 'Since the time of my sickness, last winter, I have endeavored to make full trial, to determine whether I could perform the duties of the Christian min-istry in this place. The result has been a conviction on my mind that I shalll not be able to do all that the condition of the congregation requires. Thus far there is, so far as I know, a good degree of harmony in the Society;."
