Philip Carrigain 1842 This stone was erected by Mr. Carrigain's associates of the New Hampshire bar. He was long a practitioner of law in Concord, was for four years secretary of state, 1805-'09, the author of the largest map of New Hampshire, which he published in 1816, he was giv[en] authority of the Legislature. Carrigain house was built in 1799, men from parts of the town met in large number to raise the frame of his ambitious house but as this was th[e] day that the tidings of George Washington's death reached Concord and the men straight way suspended their 'work and went home in sorrow.' Tradition says that about time he was disposed to pay his address to the daughter of Pres. John Wheelock, of Dartmouth College, and that his large anticipations had some influence in determining the size o[f] the house. He was never able to finish it, and for many years elderly people called it Carrigain's Folly. His remains were interred in the old burying-ground, and remained several years without a monument. He was the first to apply to New Hampshire its popul[ar] and appropriate soubriquet, 'The Granite State.' applied by Carrigan, June 22, 1825 at the Lafayette."
