The caption states, "Born 1707 Died 1757 James Osgood kept the first public house in Concord at the site of the First National Bank corner of Depot and North Main street. To this house were borne the slain in the fight with Indians on the Hopkinton road August 11, 1746, an indication that its shelter was then a place of common rendezvous. The bodies of the dead were collected and laid side by side in a cart which had been sent with a pair of oxen from Eastman's fort, as all men refused the gruesome task, Reuben Abbot, then only twenty-four years of age, drove the rude ambulance, under guard of soldiers and in habitants, to James Osgood garrison. This house was burned August 17, 1854. He married Hannah Hazen, of Boxford, Mass., they had eight children, Hannah the sixth married Col. Andrew McMillan, November 12, 1761. After James Osgood death April 6, 1757 at the age of 50 years, his widow succeeded him at the tavern, which she kept until the fire August 17, 1757, after the fire she opened a tavern on North Main street where is now the Exchange block until about 1798. Hannah his wife sleeps at his side in the Old North cemerty [cemetery]. This stone is called the Second Class of stones, being of silicious slate, short and quite broad in proportion to their height. The faces are neatly and peculiarly ornamented with borders of geometric figurines. Each had a outline of a heart on its righ[t] hand upper corner and that of a coffin standing perpendicularly on the opposite side."
