Photographic print of the Dolly Varden Fence between the Abbot and Hutchins houses at 12-14 South Street in Concord, NH. The caption states, "Dolly Varden Fence 12-14 South Street 1872 Gould the photographer has made three stereoscope views of the Dolly Varden fence on South street. It was built by Edward A. Abbot, treasurer of the Abbot Downing Company, to shut off the view from his next door neighbor Mr. Abel Hutchins of the firm of Hutchins & Co. wholesale flour store near the Deport." A photocopy of another caption states, "No. 1. Showed the right side, as it appeared from the inventors' point of view. Smooth in aspect and majestic in proportions. Residence of Mr. Hutchin's on left, and the carriage house of Mr. Abbot on the right. The entrance in the fence led to a circular drive around the Abbot grounds. No. 2. View is from the victim's side. A towering labyrinth of posts, planks and rail. The Abbot house was built before 1844 by Sampson Ballard, who opened up South street. Gov. Nathaniel Baker was the next owner, selling to Edward A. Abbot in 1856 Alonzo Downing next owner in 1874. Miss Lucy Downing told me in 1958, that she could remember the first thing her father did after acquiring the house was to remove the fence. No. 3. Was so taken as to bring into sight the small just cause in the distance. Altogether, they form an interesting pictorial chapter of our local history, as well a great moral lesson on the neighbody [neighborly] virtues, which no Concord family should be without. -- from the Concord Monitor May 25, 1872."
