The First Free Library, Supported by Public Funds. Jeremy Belknap urged the people of the Province to found so-called 'social' libraries to be used by groups of people as the 'easiest, cheapest, and most effectual mode of diffusing knowledge.' These were succeeded by public libraries and Peterboro [Peterborough] has the honor of founding the first public library in the United States, supported by public funds, in 1833. This library is on the main route of travel through the Town of Peterboro [Peterborough]. Portrayed by Town of Peterboro [Peterborough]."
