The caption states, "Sesquicentennial Parade, June 21, 1938. 1870. Coaching Days In The Mountains. The hotels of the North Country mountain region in the '80's and '90's staged a coaching parade each year as a climax to the social season. Great rivalry existed among the hotels and happy the one who secured the pennant for the best decorated entry. The long street was thronged with observers as the beautiful parade passed in review. The splendid single, tandem, matched pair-four, and eight teams were the finest specimens of horse flesh that could be secured and they were motive power for beautifully decorated coaches, dog carts, mountain wagons, and magnificent equipages. Guests in their summer finery with gay parasols rode on top of the coaches and the bugles and tally horns proclaimed to the world 'the horse is King.' Portrayed by Mountain View House, Whitefield, N. H. 'Pecketts' on Sugar Hill, Franconia, N.H. The New Mount Washington Hotel, Bretton woods, N. H. The Philbrook Farm, Shelburne, N. H."
