Scope and Content:
Broadside advertising for volunteers to garrison Fort Constitution in New Castle, NH, dated March 22, 1862. The captain commanding Fort Constitution was James Davidson (1800-1875), who had served at Fort Constitution since 1823. Governor Ichabod Goodwin appointed Davidson as captain on May 9, 1861. The broadside asks for 52 able-bodied and robust men to protect the fort. The men would serve for three years unless discharged earlier, and once the company ranks were full, the men would be mustered. Requirements were that the men must be between 18 and 40 years old. For their service, they would receive pay, rations, and clothing, the same as other New Hampshire militia volunteers.
