In the letter, which is not addressed to anyone and could be considered a short memoir, Sargent writes about key events and decisions of his life, some of which are somewhat incoherent. At the beginning of the writing, he discusses his political history including for whom he voted in presidential elections and some general views on American history. He describes his time in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in the mid-nineteenth century and some events of his childhood.
