- Scope and Content:
- An 18 page report to the commissioners for trade and plantations, dated September 25, 1699 from Lieutenant Governor William Partridge and Benjamin Jackson in Portsmouth, NH. In the report, Partridge and Jackson primarily discuss locations that would be profitable for harvesting masts for the building of ships. The report details locations in New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts to be settled for shipbuilding; provides suggestions for encouraging men to work the lands, including offering them small parcels of land to settle on; and discusses the impact the French and Indians have had on the ownership of lands, for which they are now at peace. They note that while they are now at peace with the Native Americans, if the Natives make war, the Natives will be destroyed. They go on to discuss remaining in the King's service and issues they have had with other gentlemen, which has delayed the shipment of masts and goods.
