Pre-printed diary for the year 1865 and possibly into 1866, used by Hiram Wentworth of Milton Mills, NH, and a member of the 4th Company of the 1st New Hampshire Heavy Artillery Regiment. The diary includes a calendar and tables of useful information, including a list of Sundays and eclipses. The diary begins on January 1, 1865. Some pages used for figuring sums; in others, Wentworth writes of every day events, such as drilling, inspections, and letters written and received. He records the assassination of Abraham Lincoln on April 14th and 15th. After the war, Wentworth returned home and went to work in the mill. He appears to have been a religious man, attending meeting and celebrating the day (December 30th) that he finished reading the New Testament.
