In the letter, Greeley tells Tappan his wife has died, but suffered for so many years that he buried her with dry eyes. He goes on to state he is terribly beaten as he "has been attacked so bitterly" during his presidential campaign. He hopes Tappan will take a year off from politics as there is "no use to fight them when they have the staff wholly in their hands."
